The Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) is a nationwide
network of free open-enrollment college-preparatory schools in under-resourced
communities throughout the United States. The KIPP Network consists of free,
open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing
students in underserved communities for success in college and life.
There are currently two KIPP schools participating in CHAMP.
KIPP Sunnyside High School is a
public charter school serving college-bound 9th through 12th graders from Houston's Third Ward,
Hiram Clarke, and Sunnyside communities. Their academic and co-curricular
programs are designed to provide a college preparatory experience that
empowers students with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets to go to and through college.
KIPP Liberation College Preparatory
Middle School serves 5th through 8th grade students residing in the communities
of Third Ward, South Park, Sunnyside, and the East End of Houston. The outstanding
team of teachers and leaders at KIPP Liberation strive daily to mold
young thinkers into scholars and service-oriented leaders. Through rigorous
lessons, a data-driven culture, and student-centered teaching and learning,
teachers push students to work hard, be kind, have fun, and accomplish
their goals.
HISD Schools
The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is
the largest public school system in Texas, and the seventh-largest in the United States.
HISD serves as a community school district for most of the city of Houston and
several nearby and insular municipalities in addition to some unincorporated areas. Like
most districts in Texas it is independent of the city of Houston and all other
municipal and county jurisdictions. There is currently one HISD school participating in CHAMP.
Ryan
Middle School is located in the Third Ward and serves 5th through 8th grade students.
Ryan Middle School is associated with Baylor College of Medicine, and provides an
innovative, accelerated health science program to prepare diverse students for
rigorous high school programs, college, and future careers.
Cullen
Middle School is located in the Third Ward and serves 6th through 8th grade students.
Hope Academy High School was a second-chance high school located in the
Third Ward. HISD closed Hope Academy in 2015.
